In august 2018 severe flooding
affected in southern part of kerala due
to unsual rainfall during monsoon season. It was the worst flooding in kerala in
nearly a century.more than 445 people died, many were missing .Farmers crops
haven been destroyed .
Districts like
chalakudy,aluva,kuttanad
Chengannur,aranmula,iduki,wayannad,.All
the 14 districts of the state were placed on red alert .It was the worst flood
in kerala after ‘’The great flood of 99’’.Happened
in 1924 This great flood of 99 occured when the periyar river in kerala flooded in the month of july 1924.As the
Malayalam calendar was popular in kerala, this flood is generally called as “Thonnotti
onapathile vellapokkam’’.Even a huge mountain called ‘’Karinthiri mala’’Was washed away by this flood and the road to munar also went
along with it.In the 2018 flooding most
of the dams were opened. The government of kerala argued with supreme court
that sudden release of water from the mullaperiyar dam by the tamil nadu
government was one of the reasons for
the devasting flood in kerala .The tamil nadu government rejected the
argument saying that kerala suffered the deluge due to discharge of water from
80 reservoirs across kerala.Idukki dam is the main source for the flood because
the flow generated from its own independent catchment and unprecendented heavy
rainfall while the discharge from mullaperiyar dam was sufficiently less
.1,247,496 people have found shelter in camps. The flooding has affected
hundreds of villages ,destroyed 10,000km of roads and thousands of homes have
been damaged .The government cancelled all the onam celebrations.
A
controversy has leaked that ‘’They say the flood arises because of not allowing
women in ayyapan temple ‘’
The flood situation continued to remain grim in Pampa, Pulmedu forest route to reach the Lord Ayyappa temple for the oneday Niraputhari festival celebrations on Wednesday. The district administration’s delay in taking a decision on ensuring the safe passage of the thantri and Devaswom authorities to the Lord Ayyappa temple meant the thantri, in whose presence the melsanthi opens the Sreekovil of the temple as per the age-old practice, failed to reach the temple when it was opened at 5 pm on Tuesday. Earlier, the authorities had two options before them to ensure the thantri and his entourage reached the Sannidhanam on time. So they say the reson of flooding may also be for not allowing womens in ayyapan temple.
