Sarkar : Film review

By Akshay

Plot
An NRI comes to India to cast his vote, he becomes a prey of election manipulation. Once stuck in the political quicksand, he endeavours to clean the electoral politics which is the last hope of democracy.

Firstly, Vijay can't get a better platform to express his political ambitions. That too in this time of power vacuum. Sarkar mostly succeeds because of this. A script Vijay needed, a movie for A.R Murugadoss to make a comeback and a landmark statement Vijay’s fans wanted their star to make.

Yet, this movie is a standalone and can’t be compared to this combo’s previous outings. This movie could be enjoyed watching in that way. This has more of a star Vijay and not a character like Jagadish (Thupakki) or Kathiresan, Jeevanandham (Kaththi).

A.R Murugadoss in Sarkar does less in designing a backstory and idiosyncrasies of characters. There is less of a character evolution, excepting Vijay, which too looks a bit contrived.Jagadish for example, solves rubik cube in confusion, hides villains in his wardrobe and suchlike.Whereas Sundar Ramaswamy (Vijay) in Sarkar has no such details, but just IT companies googling his name and startled by his corporate cunningness.

Some logical lapses like, Varalakshmi from Canada advising on political situation in Tamil nadu to a politician who has 55 years of political experience was so unbecoming of Murugadoss.

A.R Murugadoss’s obsession with press meets and public speeches has worked out yet again. There are some 2 press meets and Vijay’s stirring speech which gains applause throughout the scenes.

Vijay’s movies need a ‘no child was harmed’ certificate too, as a child necessarily gets hurt in his movies changing Vijay’s line of action and acting. Again, a 10 on 10 for a hospital scene that throws light on the excesses of the governmental departments.

Vijay carries this movie on his shoulders which works in two ways. The positive way, a racy mass screenplay and the negative way is making the strong political message take the backseat due to heroics.

When it comes to relatabililty, Sarkar feels the needing.Vijay plays a larger than life character which he already is, unlike the Jeevanandham (Kaththi) who we empathized with all his reflections of our excesses.

The punchlines with political undercurrent is sometimes catchy and sometimes preachy. The dancer Vijay as usual made the crowd go crazy.

A.R Rahman’s BGM throughout was being cheered as he got the equations right every time with all kinds of scenes. When Vijay springs into the action the Top tucker BGM just gave the audience an adrenaline rush. The well received songs were visually appealing too. Unfortunately, a talent like Keerthy suresh was restricted to the songs alone.

Democracy is for the people, by the people and of the people. That is the success of a Sarkar (government). This Sarkar’s success is by the Vijay fans, of the Vijay fans but not exclusively for Vijay fans. That is the result when Vijay teams up with A.R Murugadoss. This Deepavali combo has once again lived up to expectations.
